A thousand year ago, after the great war ended, the gods left this land.  Without the gods, soon magic and sorcery disappeared as well, and with them all the magical creatures, fairies and angels.  From the ruins rose a new world without magic, and only one magical people remained:  the winged tribe, whose members could still converse with gods, and command the old magic and runes.

Leilo was a promising young officer in the army.  With a brashness that was almost arrogance, he told his superior officer that he never apologized.  Until one day in the forest, he came upon a beautiful youth bathing in the pond, who looked like the legendary winged angels.

The youth, Leilo later found out from his irate superior, was Gia, the most brillant student at the seminary, who was purifying himself for the ceremony to become the high priest.  But now that he had been seen during the purification, his future was ruined.  Leilo still refused to apologize. Saying  "Since I won't apologize, the only thing I can do is to make you happy,"
Leilo invited Gia to come live with him, and promised to take care of him for all his life.

But Gia seemed to take his expulsion from the seminary in stride.  In fact, he seemed downright happy.  Until he learned that he might be able to remain at the seminary after all.  Gia escaped from the school, hoping Leilo could shield him from his future, for Gia was truly the last of the winged angels, someone who could destroy the world as well as heal.

Like the other books in Daran's Narcissus series, this is a sweet love story with a happy ending, though the fantasy theme makes a welcome change from the more mundane settings.
