Sougetsu promises Shirou that Fujimaru will remain untouched but breaks his
word. Fujimaru is imprisoned in an old mineshaft and regularly worked over by the boss'
men. He's cared for by Saizou, a crippled member of the band. Saizou and Fujimaru fall in
love but can only express it when Fujimaru attempts suicide. Fujimaru is in despair at his
defiled state and the fact that his existence keeps Shirou from making his escape. Saizou
makes love to him to console him and forms a plan whereby Fujimaru and Shirou can escape.
But before he can put it into effect, the jealous okama tells Shirou what's been happening
to his brother, knowing this will drive Shirou into a fury of bloodlust. Shirou is in the
process of slaughtering all the men when the noise brings Sougetsu out. Shirou is about to
attack Sougetsu when the okama intercepts his stroke. Shirou makes his escape while the
okama in his turn tries to kill Sougetsu so they can die together. Sougetsu kills the
okama instead, without turning a hair. In the meantime Shirou has freed Fujimaru from his
fetters but Fujimaru won't leave without Saizou. Sougetsu finds Saizou setting fire to a
load of explosives. He reveals to us that Saizou is in fact his incestuous son by his own
mother. The incest with his mother has made Sougetsu feel defiled. 'That's why you're
attracted to Shirou who is so pure,' Saizou says. 'Like father, like son. I couldn't
resist Fujimaru's purity.' The dynamite explodes as Fujimaru comes upon the two. He rushes
into the arms of the wounded Saizou and tells Shirou to escape before the mineshaft
collapses. He intends to die with Saizou. In despair Shirou flees as the rocks come
tumbling down. Sougetsu too has escaped. He muses, 'Saizou, you win. You got Fujimaru but
I never once gained a hold in Shirou's heart.' Meanwhile Shirou suffers agonies at the
loss of his dream of freeing his beloved brother and escaping to a new life with him.
In the nearby village are two young brothers, Chihiro and Tatsuma. Chihiro dresses like a woman. He used to prostitute himself to keep his brother alive, but now he works in a gambling den. The brothers find the unconscious Shirou in the woods and take him home. In the course of time the inevitable happens. Chihiro falls for Shirou, but only reveals his love after he's been raped by a former client who won't take no for an answer. Chihiro and Shirou confide their bitter past experiences to each other and make love. But the villagers come to drive out the demonic redhaired stranger. Shirou kills them all and leaves the village with Chihiro weeping in despair. A while later Sougetsu too comes upon them. When Chihiro learns he's in pursuit of Shirou, he says, 'Tell Shirou that we're waiting for him- Chihiro and Tatsuma are waiting.' Sougetsu says, 'He's not the sort of man you can get by waiting for him.' He himself tracks Shirou to the village of outcasts where he's taken refuge. Even there the others shun him. Sougetsu torments Shirou with his cowardice in living on, waiting for Sougetsu to come kill him. 'You aren't worth killing. If you haven't the courage to die, then live on! Live to fight me!' They make love while Shirou admits to himself that Sougetsu alone is the one who sets him on fire and quenches his flames. When Sougetsu wakes up, Shirou is gone. Sougetsu knows he will still follow him until Shirou finally dies. 'And when you do, call my name. At that moment I'll make you mine for good.'
