Aestheticism Mailing List's Guide for the Perplexed

Part IV: Slashable Manga

(nothing even remotely suggested but either the fans have yaoi'd them already or the guys are so gorgeous the fans should have yaoi'd them.) All anime series have web pages accessible through the anime web turnpike. MYF denotes major yaoi fandoms.

Gundam Wing* (anime series plus OAVs) (MYF)

The latest Gundam anime series from Sunrise Productions. Gundams are 'mobile suits'- anthropoid fighting machines. Lots and lots and lots of yaoi about various pairings among the five teenaged pilots Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatre and Wu Fei; and between the older characters Treize Kushrenada and Zechs Marquese (mysterious man in a mask aka Milliard Peacecraft aka hommage to Char Aznable of the original Gundam series.) See dj excerpts.

Slam Dunk (anime series and manga in Jump Comics)(MYF)

A high school basketball team. Lovely anime that runs to deep red glowing colors. Main pairing- rambunctious redhead first year Sakuragi and dark-haired dark-natured teammate and rival Ryuukawa.

Muuyuu Hakushou* (Long-running anime and 19 volume manga in Jump Comics) (MYF)

'Gov't White Paper on the Spirit World' or Poltergeist Report.

Teenage semi-delinquent Yuusuke becomes an agent of Koenma, lord of the spirit realm (a small kid with a pacifier.) He and his red-haired rival Kuwabara turn out to have great spiritual powers, useful for blowing opponents off the face of the earth. They team up with the demon Hiei (short, feisty) and the former fox-spirit, now teenaged boy Kurama (Minamino Shuuichi in his human form) to battle beasties, mostly in the context of a tournament held in the demon world. Yaoi pairing of choice: Kurama and Hiei. Others: Kurama and his opponent Karasu (black hair and face mask, and in the anime an obvious case of the hots for Kurama.) Fox spirit Kurama (silver hair, tunic, not a nice person) and- well, anybody: Hiei/ Koenma/ human Kurama/ fox-spirit's one-time ally-enemy Yomi (bent horns.) See dj excerpts.

St.Seiya (manga, anime series plus OVAs)

Granddaddy of the 'endless warriors' genre. Five guys trained to battle evil/ each other/ whoever. Blond Hyoga may have been the first ever yaoi series-slut: serious warrior in the anime becomes in the djs an insatiable sex-machine. (Bottom, mostly, but natch. Insatiable sex machines are uke in the Japanese tradition.) Usually paired with dark-haired Hyouga in the Japanese equivalent of Kirk/Spock: classic, and if you can think of a story about them it's been done. Predates the explicitly explicit genre of yaoi, hence tends to be fairly romantic until you get into the a/us.

Shurato (anime series plus OVAs)

First variation on the endless warriors. Visually gorgeous animation series, based on a novel so it has a coherent plot, about two high school buddies who get transported to an alternative dimension where they find themselves mythic Indian warriors, and Shurato's best friend Gai is now trying to kill him. Alas, both novel and anime had a confusing ending- though not, if I understand correctly, the same ending.

Samurai Troopers (anime series plus OVAs)

Third generation of endless warriors. Well-thought out and well- paced anime series and OAVs. Five young good guys and four demon bad guys who all ought to be on the same side but aren't. ST dj's run 95% to the five human warriors- the cute bishounen thing, as someone put it- but check out those demon lords for the really fun stuff.

Koko wa Greenwood (This is Greenwood) (anime OVAs)

Koko wa Greenwood! Oh yeah...boy's dorm and lots of pretty boys. Shinobu is too cool! (and a twisted, bisexual sister) (Baxter)

Rasen no Kakera Manga by TACHIBANA Kaimu.

She's done a lot of fanstuff, esp. for Troopers and such, and her art is very very nice. (on another note, she's also the author of Shinesman =P)

Inu Yasha Manga by TAKAHASHI Rumiko-- running in Shounen Sunday, at least 7 volumes so far, probably more by now.

Shounen series demanding yaoi/slash to be written for 'em. Pretty unscrupulous half-youkai (demon, spirit) and his even prettier all-youkai all evil niisan are too hard to resist. Sort of an alternate-timeline fantasy semi-romance. The romance is of course between Inu Yasha and Kagome, the reincarnation of his former Human love, but like I said -- slash him with niisan, Sesshoumaru's prettier. (Katchan)

Fushigi Yuugi (manga and anime series plus OVAs)*

Fushigi Yuugi is slash central as far as I can see. Before I even knew about slash and yaoi the thought of all those seishi and just one girl made me wonder... (Baxter)

Of course, all the cute guys are in love with the one girl...(Jeanne)

So is this a Mary Sue? (Susan)

Tenku no Escaflowne (the Vision of Escaflowne) (anime series)

One of my all time faves. Van Farnel just begs to be taken, by...his brother, Allan, definitely Dilandou...How about Dilandou's troops? All those young, bishou barely men whom he already slaps around? And how about Dryden Fossa...his ryujiin fascination, his hair accesories and his 'quest for knowledge'. (Baxter)

Dear Boys

This fits in w/the shonen stuff that could very much be slashed. The artwork is almost shoujo b/c of the absolutely incredible amount of bishonen, although the series itself is, quite obviously not. It's a fun basketball manga with a lot of good friendship stuff. And Ai-chan is always good for fun. (Monica)

Final Fantasy 7* (MYF)

A visually impressive RPG game that hit the dojinshi world just as the game zines are "in". There's now mountains of it, I'm glad to say.¡@ The game only posits you the player as Cloud Strife who goes through a foreboding city with demons and a must-have evil corporation SHINRA (we have them too, called the IRS). Sephiroth was just a tool used by SHINRA and one Cloud must put down with a small gathering of minions he finds along the way. The dojinshi fandom focuses on the information not given in detail in the zine. What or who does Sephy do in his spare time? What did Hojo really do to a handsome Vincent before he performs the experiments on him? How close were Sephy and Zax anyway? You get my drift. The dojinshi speculations are, as always, more interesting than the canon. (Susan)
